Janacek and Bartók were devoted to folklore and collected folk songs from villages. Stravinsky was also fascinated by folk rituals. Stravinsky's "The Marriage," which deals with Russian wedding customs, was composed between 1914 and 1917, with major revisions to the instrumentation, and was world premiered in Paris in 1923 by the Ballets Russes led by Diaghilev with choreography by Nijinska, the final version in this recording. Four pianos were substituted for the orchestration, creating a percussive effect. Kirill Gerstein plays the first piano in this performance! At the age of 71, shortly after completing his opera "The Macropulos Affair," Janacek also conceived the idea of composing a children's song.Based on a folk song, "Waraben" (Introduction, 18 pieces and Epilogue) was composed in 1924 and revised in 1927, the last year of his life. This revised version has a special arrangement with solo voice, 10 woodwinds, double bass, drums, and piano. Bartók's "Three Village Scenes" for female voice and chamber orchestra is an arrangement based on folk songs collected in Zvolen, in what is now central Slovakia, and adapted from the third, fourth, and fifth pieces of the solo piece "Village Scenes.This is a remarkable recording of the Prague Philharmonic Chorus led by Lukáš Vasilek with its elite members.
