Description:
Composer Ullmann (1898-1944) was born in Czechoslovakia to Jewish parents. He had great talent as a conductor and critic, but was a tragic figure who ultimately failed to leave the country when the Nazis invaded Prague in 1940, and died two years later in a concentration camp. Most of his works were destroyed by fire, but ironically, the majority of his compositions from the Theresienstadt camp have survived, and the seven piano sonatas here, Nos. 5 through 7, are from that period. His works have a solid form similar to Beethoven's, but with a modern orientation, and they occupy a unique position in 20th century piano music. This performance will be given by Michal Tsalka, whose repertoire ranges from classical to contemporary works. Naxos Japan
