Description:

New York live recording by trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Payton, featuring Peter Washington (b) and Kenny Washington (ds), piano, Fender Rhodes, and vocals! !"Smoke Sessions Records presents a new leader release from popular trumpet & multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Payton. This album was recorded live at the Smoke jazz club in New York City over three days beginning May 30, 2019. The album features not only trumpet, but also acoustic piano playing, which he has been honing as a multi-instrumentalist, and Fender Rhodes, which he plays along with trumpet, as well as vocals and sampled music. The rhythm section features Peter Washington (b) and Kenny Washington (ds), who are currently number one in both ability and popularity, and are also very active in the regular trio of popular pianist Bill Charlap. He began playing trumpet and began his professional career at age 10 with the Bourbon Street band. After touring with Marcus Roberts and Elvin Jones in the early 90's, he signed with Verve Records and released his first album "From This Moment" in 1995, and in 1996, his performance on the soundtrack of the movie "Kansas City" won him the following year's 1997 He has recorded seven albums for Verve Records, and after working for Warner Brothers, Blue Note, and Nonesuch labels, he has been actively releasing works on his own Paytone Records label in recent years. Payton has long been inspired by pianist Ahmad Jamal's classic live album "At the Pershing-But Not for Me" and wanted to create an album that could coordinate both a jazz club atmosphere and a fresh sound. For Nicholas Payton, it must have been a truly special and once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to give the performance of his dreams in front of such an intimate audience. The double CD set includes 15 songs, 11 of which are Payton's originals and 4 familiar standards. The opening track, the title track "Relaxin' with Nick," begins with a swingy, light piano trio performance, then switches from piano to trumpet and backs it up with a Fender Rhodes. There were also vocals, sampled tracks, funk, Cuban-style and hip-hop numbers, and much more. What is surprising is how perfectly the band performs the various styles of music in front of the audience under the limited circumstances of a live performance. The album cover is a great photo, reminiscent of Elvin Jones & Richard Davis' "Heavy Sounds" with cigarette smoke wafting in the backlight. The intense and weighty performance by Nicholas Payton, Peter Washington, and Kenny Washington is "Heavy Sounds" itself.
