Steve Davis (Trombone)
Description:
Smoke Sessions Records, operated by the New York jazz club Smoke, presents a new studio recording by Steve Davis, one of the most acclaimed trombonists of his generation. This is his third leader release on the label. It is titled Correlations. Steve Davis was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1967. He has performed with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Chick Corea & Origin, Jackie McLean Sextet, Benny Golson New Jazztet, Christian McBride Big Band, Eric Alexander, and other elite jazzmen in New York City. He has been playing with important jazzmen such as the all-star band "One For All," and his popularity has been unshakable. The six members of this recording are elite students of the music department of the University of Hartford in Connecticut, who studied under the famous altoist Jackie McLean. The six musicians include Joshua Bruneau (tp), with his hard bop feel; London-born Wayne Escoffery (ts), a favorite student of McLean's; Xavier Davis (p), a legitimate pianist; Deslon Douglas (b); popular drummer Jonathan Barber (ds); and album leader Steve Davis (tb). As the title "Correlations" suggests, you can feel the depth of the correlation between these members. The album contains 7 originals by Davis and 4 originals by jazzmen such as Horace Silver and McCoy Tyner, for a total of 11 tracks.Davis' originals are all orthodox hard bop that keeps you on your toes. Davis' original compositions include "Can't Complain," which uses the opening motif from Hank Mobley's "ThisI Dig of You," "Song for My Love," which he wrote for his beloved wife after missing her during a long European tour, and "Blues for Owen," a lilting blues number dedicated to longtime Hartford jazz critic OwenMcNally, who passed away in 2018. The album is full of highlights, including "Blues for Owen," a lilting blues number dedicated to Owen McNally, a longtime jazz critic in Hartford who passed away in 2018. Peace" is a well-known Horace Silver composition, which Davis performed with Silver when he appeared for a week at the NY Blue Note in May 2004. This was the last time Silver performed in public. This is a legitimate, straight-ahead hard bop album that is a perfect example of Steve Davis at his best in recent years. Recorded in New York City in September 2018. The warm and soft sound of the famous mixing console Neve 8038 is also noteworthy.
