For MERCY, Cale has enlisted some of the most curious young artists in the music world: Animal Collective, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, and Actress. The songs that make up MERCY were written over the years as Cale watched society teeter on the brink of dystopia. Whether it's musings on Trump and Brexit, Corona and climate change, civil rights, right-wing extremism, or the sovereignty and legal status of melting sea ice near the Antarctic and Arctic, or the reckless arming of Americans, Cale puts the bad news of the day into his words. With the preceding single "NIGHT CRAWLING," lessons from a (still) richly lived life are also brought to the forefront.If we constantly regret the past, will we not be perpetually disappointed? And as he sang with Wise Blood in the song "Story of Blood," he asked if, after all, we can save each other instead of relying on a God we will never know, and the piano prelude turned into a heavy beat and dazzling sun-like synthesizers. Then Cale and Wise Blood's voices cross smoothly like two phantoms trying to find a partner in the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Swing your soul," the two sing wistfully. In the final part, Cale reminds himself that this existence is not his alone. 'I will return in the morning my friends, to pick them up. I take them into the light." The music video by Emmy Award-winning director Jethro Waters, featuring Cale and Wise Blood, is a mix of disquiet and silence. Its deep colors and religious undertones underscore the song's dark, spiritual mood.In this album, Cale reimagines how his music is made, how it sounds, and even how it works: the 12-song MERCY moves toward vulnerable love songs and hopeful musings on the future through electronic sounds born in a dark night.
