Description:

An undiscovered masterpiece of Neumann conducting Bruckner! This is a rare recording of the First No. 1 even at the time, and the performance has been talked about as one of the best performances of this piece. Mastered only in the analog domain and converted directly to DSD! This is the 26th SACD hybrid version of the latest reissue project of ETERNA's original analog tapes in Japan, and is an extremely rare Bruckner recording by Neumann. This is also a rare recording of Bruckner No. 1 by Neumann, which at the time had few recording opportunities. This is one of the most important recordings of Neumann's tenure as Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra (1964-68), along with "Our Fatherland" and the four Mahler recordings. This is the only Bruckner recording by Neumann, except for live recordings, that exists. In addition, this reissue includes Wagner's "Wesendonck Lieder" recorded in 1964 with soprano Hanne-Laure Kouzes (the original recording is with "R. Strauss: Four Last Songs"). This is a series of songs composed in parallel with "Tristan und Isolde," the first performance of which took place in 1862. Bruckner's Symphony No. 1 was begun in 1965 and completed the following year, so the two works are close in time, although there is no particular connection between them. This recording of Bruckner by Neumann is an exceptional example of how the music of the First Symphony can be both propulsive and beautifully resonant.Neumann's enthusiasm, which was also evident in Mahler, was reflected in the performance, and it can be said that it is a straightforward expression of the momentum of Bruckner's early years. Neumann's ability to clearly embody the perfection that Bruckner originally possessed is unmistakable. The tempo is not too fast, but rather too condensed, making for a full and rewarding listening experience. The sound of the orchestra of the time is beautiful, and the graceful sound of the woodwinds and horns is impressive. Although No. 1 is often included in complete works recordings, this disc, recorded alone, is still highly acclaimed as an outstanding performance. Neumann's ability to bring out the essence of the piece should be highly appreciated. Although it is unclear how it was recorded independently at the time, ETERNA had recorded Bruckner with several conductors, so whether Neumann wanted to or not, the fact that this valuable recording has been preserved is a joy for Bruckner fans and others alike. This latest reissue allows us to appreciate this performance one step further than on the previous CD, and I expect that it will be appreciated once again. (1/2)
