World premiere recording of the Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 1 by 20th century Finnish female composer Helvi Leiviska! Helvi Leiviska was born in 1902 in Helsinki, Finland. He studied piano and composition with Erkki Melartin and Artur Vilner, and worked as a librarian at the Sibelius Academy from 1933 to 1968, composing in between. He wrote three numbered symphonies, the unnumbered "Sinfonia Brevis," a "Triple Fugue" for orchestra, cantatas, film scores, orchestral suites, songs, violin sonatas, piano pieces, and chamber music. Although he did not achieve fame during his lifetime, he has recently received renewed attention. Two world premiere recordings. The "Piano Concerto in D minor" was composed between 1931 and 1935. The "Fugue" is composed of "Allegro ma non troppo - Allegro," "Vivace," "Andantino ma tranquillo - Maestoso - Andantino cantabile," and "Andantino ma tranquillo - Maestoso - Andantino cantabile.It was premiered on November 23, 1935 by the Helsinki Philharmonic, conducted by Toivo Haapanen (1889-1950), soloist Ernst Rinko (1889-1960). Composers such as Uno Krami, Suljo Lanta, and Selim Palmgren who attended the premiere praised her compositional and orchestration skills, but also commented on her treatment of the solo part and climax. The score for this piece was lost after its premiere, so it was restored from the piano reductions and parts that remained, performed, and recorded. The soloist is Oliver Trindle, who has recorded many albums for the German Hensler label and is a dedicated presenter of rarely performed music. Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major was written in 1947. It is written in four classical movements: "Allegro moderato - tempo di valse," "Andante sostenuto," "Vivace" (Scherzo), and "Allegro non troppo. Nils-Erik Faugstedt conducted the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the first performance on March 18, 1948.For this premiere, Lejwiska is said to have set aside 85,000 FIM (about 4,000 EUR) on loan. The work was performed three times until 1951, and was revived in 2022 after 70 years of silence. It is a symphony that shows the traditionalist, romanticist side and the influence of Madetoya. The Staatskapelle Weimar is one of the oldest orchestras, founded in 1491.
