Mazur, Bodo, Ferenčík—Legendary Performances from the Prague Spring That Made History The sixth installment in Czech Radio's independent label "Radio Service" series, 'Prague Spring Music Festival Gold Edition'. Disc 1 features Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, performed by Kurt Masur conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra at Prague's Smetana Hall on June 4, 1991. Kurt Masur (1927-2015) established his presence as a leading conductor in East Germany. He began his career as an opera house conductor and became Music Director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1970, gaining renown for his legendary partnership with the orchestra. As a member of the East German Academy of Arts, Mazur held national authority and wielded social influence beyond that of an artist. His statement during the 1989 Leipzig "Monday Demonstrations" symbolized this. With 70,000 citizens facing gun barrels, he appealed for the avoidance of force, creating the catalyst that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. His presence remained undiminished after reunification, and he continued to be active internationally as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic from 1991 to 2002. Musically, he recorded Beethoven's complete symphonies twice with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The first recording took place from 1972 to 1974, and the second from 1987 to 1992. This recording of the Ninth Symphony falls within the latter complete set period. Its performance at the Prague Spring Festival immediately after German reunification lends it profound historical significance alongside its musical merit. Thus, Mazur's Ninth transcends being merely a record of a great performance; it holds historical value as a sound symbolizing the watershed moment of German reunification. Disc 2 features performances with the Prague Symphony Orchestra conducted by French conductor Serge Bodet (1927-) and the world-renowned Hungarian conductor János Ferenczi (1907-1984). Born into a musical family—his father was oboist Étienne Baudot and his uncle was Paul Tortelier—French conductor Serge Baudot served as director of the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre National de Lyon before becoming Principal Conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra.Bizet's Symphony No. 1 was premiered in Basel, Switzerland in 1935 by the renowned conductor Weingartner, followed by its Paris premiere the next year under Charles Munch. Bodo had a deep friendship with Munch during his time with the Orchestre de la Ville de Paris, so this performance of Bizet must have been a brilliant and splendid one. Then comes Ferenc's interpretation of Hungarian composer Bartók's masterpiece, the Concerto for Orchestra. While this work has been recorded with orchestras like the Japan Philharmonic and the Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra, Ferenc's interpretation, with its distinctive rhythms and accents, showcases the unique perspective of a conductor from the composer's homeland.
