Description:

Macmillan's coming-of-age work, Requiem for Isobel Gordy, which will never be sung. In the days before the Reformation, there was a custom known as "witch-hunting" that swept across Europe. It is now considered to be a product of mass hysteria, but one can only imagine the horrific conditions that prevailed at the time. In Scotland, approximately 4,500 women were tried and killed between 1560 and 1707, and in 1662, Isobel Gordy confessed to organizing a coven of 13 women. The nakedness of the story shocked people, and she was eventually beaten with sticks and strangled to death. The music is beautifully given at the beginning, as if wishing for the peace of her soul, but the middle section explodes with dissonant and violent sounds, and Allsopp reads the score with great sincerity to depict this hellish scene. The other two pieces are Ades' "Chamber Symphony" with plenty of jazz elements and Higdon's "Percussion Concerto" which is extremely fun. All players give their best performances! [Comment courtesy of Naxos Japan.
