The Philadelphia Orchestra, led by Marin Allsopp, has recorded live highlights from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" with an all-star cast! Composed in 1935, in the last years of Gershwin's life, this opera in three acts and nine scenes is a stylistic pioneer of the musical, and is perhaps the most important work to incorporate jazz and blues into the classical repertoire. Its content depicts the lives of poor African Americans living in a town in the American South in the early 1920s, and is created using indigenous jazz and black music, whose melodious singing is its greatest appeal. This highlight features 22 songs, including such major songs from "Porgy and Bess" as "Summertime," "My Man is Gone," "Tired of Being Tired," "Bess, You're Mine," "That's Not Important," "I Love You, Porgy," and "Oh Lord, I'm Leaving, This rare live recording was made in March 2020, just before the new coronavirus pandemic.
