As the culmination of nine years of collaboration with London Symphony Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda, LSO Live proudly presents "Shostakovich: Symphonies No. 1-15"! The ten symphonies have been released on seven single discs, and now the ten-disc box set, which includes the previously unreleased Nos. 2, 3, 12, 13, and 14, as well as the Festive Overture, completes the cycle. Performing a composer's symphonies in their entirety is not only a comprehensive journey through the composer's artistic evolution, but also a unique insight into history, exploring the world as experienced by the composer and his contemporaries. Few composers embody these qualities more than Shostakovich (1906-1975), whose career was deeply shaped by the political pressures of Soviet Russia. His symphonies progress between ostensible conformity and heartfelt defiance, and are variously imbued with irony and coded resistance. Noseda says, "A series of symphonies reflects the whole picture.Shostakovich began writing No. 1 as a child and completed No. 15 a few years before his death. It is a trajectory that spanned half a century. It is the story of his own life, but it is also the story of events that took place in the world in the 20th century. Noseda, who is also known for his knowledge of Russian works, brings a rare depth to this recording that reflects his experience working with musicians who knew Shostakovich himself.
