The orchestra was passed down from Johann II to his younger brother, Eduard I, and disbanded in 1901 after completing its second tour of the United States. Following the two world wars, it was reestablished in 1966 by Eduard II, the grandson of Eduard I. After that, when Willy Boskovsky—who had served as concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic—was appointed as conductor, the orchestra quickly gained worldwide fame. It continues to carry on the tradition of the Viennese waltz and captivate audiences around the globe. This video features live footage from a commemorative concert held in 2016—the 50th anniversary of the orchestra’s reestablishment—in the “Golden Hall” of the Vienna Musikverein, a venue well-known for hosting the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert. The conductor is Alfred Eschwe, a native Viennese who has led the orchestra since 1983.
