Ballet & Dances Classical

Description:

Juliet and Romeo," the first full-length ballet new work by Mats Ek in 17 years, was premiered at the Royal Swedish Opera House on May 24, 2013, with Mariko Kida as Juliet. Mariko Kida, who won a scholarship prize at the Prix de Lausanne and is currently a member of the Royal Swedish Ballet, played the role of Juliet. The music is not Prokofiev, but Tchaikovsky. Mats Ek explained the reason for this as follows: "This piece is not based on Prokofiev, but on Tchaikovsky. The work is well known and frequently performed with Prokofiev's music. I also felt that all the possibilities for the stage had been exhausted. Tchaikovsky's music is very danceable for dancers, not only ballet music, as is typical of other ballet music. For example, the slow movement of Symphony No. 5 is perfect for expressing the emotions of the balcony, the majestic introduction of the Piano Concerto No. 1 suggests the unhappy choice of the Bailiff of Verona, and the "Theme and Variations" of Suite No. 3 successfully portrays the psychology of Romeo and Maccusio. And the "Andante Cantabile" from String Quartet No. 1 is turned into a bedroom pas de deux, while at the climax, the tragedy of the Manfred Symphony underscores the lovers' tragedy." Mats Ek's choreography is characterized by new interpretations of the classics, and this time, he has again incorporated a wealth of innovative ideas. He draws on the case of Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian street vendor who was a symbol of the "Arab Spring" of 2011, and interprets the social and family structures that led to Romeo and Juliet's deaths.Mats Ek's interpretations are not only innovative, but also remarkable in that the dances and music blend perfectly to create an emotional experience for the audience.
