This is *Falstaff*, Verdi’s final opera. Although Verdi was already celebrated as a leading figure in Italian opera, he had long wished to “write a buffa at least once,” and it wasn’t until 1890, at the age of 77, that he finally found a libretto that satisfied him. He spent about two years refining the music, and the opera premiered in 1893. Needless to say, it was a resounding success. This footage was recorded in stereo during the early days of television broadcasting. Nello Santi’s spirited conducting doubles the joy of listening to Verdi, and the finest singers of the era fill the screen with their dynamic movements. Free from any contrived or overanalyzed interpretations, this is a precious recording that approaches Verdi’s greatest work with sincere dedication. The role of Falstaff is played by Otto Edelmann, known for his portrayal of Baron Ochs in *Der Rosenkavalier*. Here, too, he delivers a masterful performance—one that makes you think there could be no one else to play this womanizing (?) charmer. Naxos Japan
