Named after the "Blessed Virgin Mary," the Marian Consort is a young vocal ensemble that burst onto the British vocal and early music scene like a comet! Founded in 2007 at the University of Oxford by the young countertenor Rory McLeery, who began his career as a member of the St. Mary’s Cathedral Boys’ Choir in Edinburgh, the Marian Consort Based on the research and historical analysis of their leader, Rory McLeery—who is also a musicologist—the ensemble continues to perform church music from all eras, with a focus on the 15th through 17th centuries. Additionally, member Emma Walsh is a promising young soprano who participated in the Tallis Scholars’ Japan tour in June 2015. The Marian Consort performs masterpieces from a part-book compiled by the English tenor John Baldwin (c. 1560–1615), who served as a chorister at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, as early as 1575. This is a magnificent program that encapsulates the charm of British and continental European polyphony.
