This latest release from conductor Lan Shui—a familiar name on the BIS label—and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra features two symphonies composed by the Hungarian composer Goldmark. While Goldmark is particularly famous for his violin concertos, the symphonies included here are also masterpieces. Goldmark’s most notable talents include his rich orchestration and melodies steeped in the Jewish folk traditions passed down through his ancestors—qualities that are fully reflected in these symphonies. ★Symphony No. 1, “A Village Wedding,” composed in 1875, is one of Goldmark’s most famous works. It has been acclaimed by audiences since its premiere, and it is said that Brahms, a friend of Goldmark’s, praised it highly as a “clear and flawless work.” Consisting of five movements, this symphony features the first movement, “Wedding March”; the second movement, “Wedding Song”; the third movement “Serenade,” the fourth movement, “In the Garden,” and the fifth movement, “Dance,” each bearing its own subtitle; each movement resembles a “melodious suite rich in folk color.” It is also known as a masterpiece beloved by great conductors, such as Beecham and Bernstein, who frequently performed it. Symphony No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op. 35, is not performed as often as the “Symphony of a Country Wedding,” but it is a work by Goldmark that is similarly rich in folk elements, featuring a more structured form and abundant pastoral motifs.
