Description:
Emmett Cohen, winner of the 2019 American Pianist Awards, is a leap forward in connecting traditional style with the present and the future! Featuring a trio and guest appearances by Marquis Hill and Melissa Aldana, Emmett Cohen, one of the finest pianists of our time, takes the next leap forward with his first Mack Avenue release. Emmett came to prominence as the third-place winner of the 2011 Thelonious Monk Competition, and has performed at major festivals including Newport, North Sea, and Monterey, as well as at prestigious clubs such as Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has also performed well in Japan as a member of Christian McBride's Tip City and as a member of Ali Jackson's trio, and has made a splash. In 2019, he was a winner of the American Pianist Awards. This work seamlessly connects the past (tradition) and present of jazz (piano). The members are Russell Hall and Kyle Poole, the current regular members. The title of the album is "Stride," and it opens with a piece that Satchmo recorded with the Carroll Dickerson Orchestra in the 1920s, with its light and flamboyant dancing stride pianos. However, as the title "Future "Stride" suggests, this work shows an eye toward the future through the sensibility of a contemporary artist. The title track, "Dardanelle," a classic number composed in 1919, is an amalgam of a glamorous Harlem mood, four-beat swing, and the modern counterpoint approach pioneered by Fred Hirsch and Brad Meldow. Dardanelle," a classic number composed in 1919, also impresses with its modern harmonies and elegant touch. The album also includes a number of guest artists who have emerged in recent years, such as Melissa, Aldana, and Marquis Hill. The song "You Already Know," which is about the fast-paced daily life in New York City, presents an all-around contemporary sound, with both frontmen soloing at a super-fast tempo and full of energy. However, they are also organically combined with the rest of the music to create a flow. Emmett, who in the past has released works with such masters as Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, and Benny Golson, has refined his own expression with his current colleagues and brought it to fruition in a single work. This is the fruit of jazz, which is not a superficial update of style, but is grounded in tradition while remaining contemporary.
