Ghosts are present throughout AVANTI. The record expresses the turmoil of chaos and loss through sharp-edged passion; riding on a foundation of melodic songwriting reminiscent of the golden era of 70's pop with a layer of grunge, Malice K's songs are frank, simple, and chilling as he explores the inner workings of memories and mistakes. However, it was while living in Los Angeles that Malice K delved further into music production, where he became a member of the artist collective DeathProof Inc.The result is two introductory, blistering, and sometimes poignant and heartfelt 20-minute EPs ("Harm or Heck," released on Deathproof in 2020, and "Clean Up on Aisle Heaven," released independently in 2022). Earlier this year, Malice K released "Radio," the first single from AVANTI, and was featured on the cover of the NME. Interviews focused on his compelling and honest songwriting, and he was described as a shape-shifter. But he is by no means amorphous. He is determined, intense, and more interested in forging his own path and building his own world than in finding a way to fit in with what already exists. Every part of Malice K is his own, from the tape and scissors artwork for the single "Radio" to the illustrations inside the album packaging to the album cover for AVANTI, which features a sculpture he created in collaboration with Cheeky Ma.And there is an extraordinary ferocity present in everything Malice K touches: the sweaty, high-tension shows, the high-flash, high-contrast photographs, the unstable, disturbing illustrations, the studio recordings that oscillate between sadness and tenderness.... AVANTI" is inhabited. It is like peering through a fingerprint-stained window into an abandoned house, littered with the relics of the well-lived. It brings with it the sense that, despite being a debut album, Malice K has arrived fully realized, imperfections and all.
