This is the first CD release of a set of "Winterreise" and "The Beautiful Watermill Girl" from Schubert's three major song cycles sung by Aines Mathews (1917-2004), an African-American mezzo-soprano who also worked as a musical actor and black spiritual singer. (Another recording of "Swan Song" is also available.) Although it is not uncommon for female singers to record and perform the same songs in modern times, Aines Matthews is the second to do so, following soprano Lotte Lehmann. (This is the first recording by a mezzo-soprano and probably also by a singer of African descent. Tokyo M-Plus
