Colors, the new 2025 duo album by free jazz female jazz singer Maria Laurette Frith and outstanding double bass player Thomas Morgan. Duo improvisation is truly rarefied territory. Creating a common language in a vast ocean of endless possibilities makes everything stand out. Especially when it comes to basic natural instruments such as voice and bass. So what happens when you invite Maria Laurette Frith, a Copenhagen-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and one of Scandinavia's finest voices, and Thomas Morgan, an exceptional double bass player, for an improvisation session? What if you invited Maria Laurette Frith, one of Scandinavia's finest multi-instrumentalists, and Thomas Morgan, an outstanding double bassist, to join them for an improvisation session? Maria Laurette Frith and Thomas Morgan are both masters of improvisation, but they have a deep connection to language. Laurette Frith, a sound artist and vocalist, creates her own language on the spot, while Morgan speaks fluent Esperanto and is fluent in computer programming languages (his father was a computer science professor). On the musical side, they have performed together several times on the Copenhagen improv scene (but never as a duo). Their influences include electronic music, contemporary compositional music, Japanese music, and free jazz. In "Colors," their starting point is minimalist music taken to the extreme. I love the music of Maria Lauretto and Thomas Morgan. Combining the two was an obvious choice for me. They were playing at a symposium night at the Brolsson Church in Copenhagen, and that night the seeds were planted for a duo recording a few years later. It was just vocals and double bass. We recorded over three hours of music in the studio. Everything that happened there was beautiful, starting from nothing and every minute seemed to open the door to something new.In fact, it was truly inspiring to listen back to every moment and explore the core of the improvisations. And in my mind, they quickly turned into compositions," says Jacob Bro, who produced "Colors" in its final stages while recording the music for "Music For Black Pigeons" with Jorgen Ress and Andreas Koufford.
