Melnikov takes on Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. The deep tone of the Brutner piano—the same type used at the time of composition—is exquisite! Melnikov, in top form, takes on Brahms’ concerto. And rather than the Second Concerto, which his mentor Richter was known for, he has deliberately chosen the First Concerto, which Richter never performed. What’s particularly noteworthy is his use of a Brutner piano built around 1859, the year the piece was premiered. Although the orchestra is the modern Basel Symphony Orchestra, Ivor Bolton—who is well-versed in Baroque opera and period instruments—conducts, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in a uniquely distinctive sonic world. The program also features Brahms’ “Tragic Overture” and the overture to Cherubini’s opera *Elisa, or The Journey to the Glacier of Mont Saint-Bernard*. The latter is a work set in Switzerland and could be considered the true forte of Bolton, who is also an opera conductor; in fact, it is said to be the piece that was first performed in Leipzig five days after the world premiere of Brahms’s Piano Concerto, with the composer himself as soloist. That performance of the concerto ended in a complete disaster, and it is said that Brahms was deeply hurt by the storm of boos. Of course, Melnikov’s performance on this album is a rich and masterful one. Brütner’s deep tone, his unhurried, unraveling narrative style, and the overwhelming music and volume at the climax all convey a remarkable sense of maturity. King International
