This is a valuable recording that allows listeners to experience this lesser-known repertoire performed by a virtuoso. ◆Originally produced by the NMClassics label and released in 2001, this album was well-received at the time. Reviews in Gramophone and other publications praised Jacques Zoon’s performance, noting that “his astonishing technique and the warm, mellow tone unique to the wooden flute are a perfect match for these Romantic works.” As such, this licensed re-release is most welcome. 【Track Listing】 ◆Verhey: Flute Concerto No. 1, Op. 43 (1898): Although composed at the end of the 19th century, this work features a style that emphasizes classical form and harmony. The third movement incorporates the “Gypsy-style” that Verhey favored. ◆ Wilms: Concertino for Flute and Orchestra (c. 1814): A work situated at the boundary between the Classical and Romantic periods, with traces of Beethoven-like power evident throughout. Since Wilms himself was an accomplished flutist, the piece also possesses a delightful technical flair. ◆Kunen: Nocturne for Flute and Orchestra: An atmospheric piece with elements reminiscent of Mendelssohn. It also contains elements reminiscent of Bellini’s world, reminding us that Kunen was also a composer of operas and ballets. ◆Verhey: Flute Concerto No. 2, Op. 57 (c. 1905): Although written seven years after the First, the style has become more substantial and cohesive, and the orchestral parts are even more substantial. 【Performers】 ◆ Jacques Zoon (Flute): A world-renowned Dutch virtuoso. He has served as principal flutist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is also known for pursuing a unique tone using a modern Böhm-system wooden flute. ◆ Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra: A chamber orchestra formerly affiliated with the Dutch public broadcaster (NOS). With a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary music, the ensemble produced numerous recordings; however, following subsequent organizational restructuring, it has since been integrated into groups such as the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. ◆Thierry Fischer: A Swiss conductor. He originally began his career as a flutist and served as principal flutist of the European Chamber Orchestra under Claudio Abbado.
