Description:
This is the fifth collection of Edward Gregson's works that the Doyen label has produced with various bands. This time, following the previous collection, the Black Dyke Band performs his recent works for your enjoyment. The highlight is "Symphony in Two Movements. This is the first symphony Gregson wrote for brass band. It consists of two movements: the first movement, Toccata, written in sonata form, and the second movement, Variations, consisting of a theme and four variations. The opening piece, "To Distant Memories - Music in the Alden Style," was commissioned by the Black Dyke Band. This piece was inspired by Percy Fletcher's symphonic poem "Labor and Love. The pieces are cleverly composed with melodic fragments and harmonies from brass band works written by Holst, Elgar, and Vaughan-Williams, who were influenced by Fletcher, and are sure to win the hearts and minds of brass band fans. Also included are the Trombone Concerto and Rococo Valiation. In addition, a conversation between Edward Gregson and Paul Hindmarsh provides more details on the compositional history of the "Symphony in Two Movements" and "To Distant Recollections," making this a wonderful collection of Gregson's works that will provide a deeper insight into his work.
