That centrality was reflected in his interpretations as music director and chief conductor of orchestras and opera houses, and by his self-respect. His unobtrusive but highly effective conducting skills made him an ideal recording artist. A Bavarian born in the orchestral city of Munich, Savarisch led the renowned Bavarian State Opera for 21 years.When Savarisch was 11 years old, he heard a performance of Humperdinck's fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel in his hometown of Munich and decided he wanted to wave his arms in the orchestra pit and make things happen. But it took him a while. A draft in the Wehrmacht delayed his inevitable service as a radio operator and a period as a prisoner of war. By his late twenties, however, he was conducting operas at the Augsburg Staatsoper (starting with "Hansel and Gretel"), and at the Aachen City Theater he became the youngest music director in Germany. He went on to record many operas, and his 1957 recording of Richard Strauss' "Capriccio" is still considered a benchmark performance. Along with more Strauss, this box also contains perhaps the finest performance of another of Sawallisch's operatic heroes, Wagner. Not to mention the famous Mozart's "The Magic Flute," some of which was recorded on Voyager's Golden Records and sent into space. No lyrics or bilingual translation is included. (Warner Music)
