French dancer Pietra Gara A tribute dedicated to Barbara, the Lady in Black Barbara (1930–1997) was a singer who became a national icon in France. Dressed in black and performing with quiet, measured self-accompaniment, she was also known as the “Lady in Black,” bearing the pain of war, loneliness, and shadows. The film "Barbara: The Black Rose of the Seine," which chronicles her life, was released in Japan in 1998, and Alexandre Tharaud released an album paying homage to her; even today, her presence continues to exert a wide and profound influence around the world. Now, a unique album has been released in which the dancer Pietragala sings in tribute to Barbara. Marie-Claude Pietragala is a dancer and choreographer who served as an étoile at the Paris Opera from 1990 to 1997. She has developed a body of work that presents the body itself as poetry—such as a video produced for the 2024 Paris Olympics in which she walks through the Louvre Museum carrying the Olympic flame—and has cultivated a dedicated following through her fusion of visual art, music, and literature. Pietragala encountered Barbara at the Théâtre du Châtelet in the 1990s and was captivated by her presence. Although Barbara passed away in 1997 and they never had the opportunity to perform together, Pietragala created the stage work *Pietragala, Barbara*, in which he envisions Barbara as a dancer. This performance expressed Barbara’s lost voice through the dancing body; it was not a depiction of Barbara’s life, but rather a step taken by a dancing woman toward singing. However, it occasionally included scenes where Pietragala herself sang. Although those “singing” scenes were limited, Pietragala’s desire to give voice to Barbara’s “song” grew stronger, leading her to decide to create this album. Pietragala’s voice is incredibly soothing, and its restrained atmosphere is the very essence of Barbara herself. With the delicate accompaniment of pianist Yanael Knell and a collaboration with chanson singer Serge Lama, the result is a truly one-of-a-kind album. APARTE
