In addition to works for two pianos selected around the theme of the Ballets Russes—which took the world by storm during the Belle Époque, a time of artistic splendor centered in Paris—the album also features Tristan’s original composition, “A Soft Shell Groove.” “The Rite of Spring” is performed in the two-piano version arranged by the composer himself. The 1913 premiere of the ballet *The Rite of Spring*—a masterpiece of 20th-century modern music—was nothing short of a “scandal.” This historically significant piece sparked a storm of boos and even escalated into a brawl between supporters and opponents. “The Tale of Prince Kalandar” is the second movement of the symphonic suite *Scheherazade*. Composed in 1888, it was performed by the Ballets Russes in 1910. This piece is also presented in the composer’s own version for two pianos. “La Valse” is a famous masterpiece composed by Ravel. Diaghilev rejected it, deeming it unsuitable for ballet, and this became the catalyst for a rift between the two—making it, in a sense, another “scandal.” We will perform Lucian Gervan’s version for two pianos. “A Soft Shell Groove” is a piece written specifically for this album by Francesco Tristano; the title incorporates the meaning “ASoft=ASOFT=ASO (AliceSaraOtt)FT (FrancescoTristano).” Universal Music
