Four masterpieces from Beethoven's early and middle period works. The symphonies are performed with great energy by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Karajan has recorded the complete works three times for Deutsche Grammophon, and this is a monumental performance of the first recording. The Violin Concerto was recorded just after Mutter's recording debut, and the then 16-year-old Mutter gives a lively performance full of youthful vigor. The Cello Sonata is a legendary recording by Rostropovich and Richter on the original Philips disc.
