Martin Cousin

Liszt: The Complete Works for Piano No. 61 This album contains five transcriptions of operatic melodies, a specialty of Liszt's as a young man. The fantasy with the melody from Meyerbeer's "The Huguenots," placed at the beginning of the album, was composed in 1836. Liszt revised this piece three times, but each revision rearranged the music, so this first draft is the longest. the second piece, "Recollections of La Scala" on a Mercadante melody, uses Mercadante as well as a melody that cannot be identified to whom it belongs. The Fantastic Rondo is based on the melody of Zarzuela "The Smuggler" by Spanish composer Manuel Garcia. It is reminiscent of "La Campanella" in its use of technical hand leaps supported by passionate Spanish-style rhythms. The transcription of "Lohengrin" is arranged relatively faithfully to the original. The final piece, "Mandragora," is a fragment of only 37 bars from Liszt's later years, but it shows some experimental elements, such as the use of atonal tuning, which Liszt was experimenting with at the time. It is performed by British pianist Martin Cousin. He is also known for playing the pianist's "hand" in the Oscar-winning film "Shine.
