Description:

The popular Villa-Lobos series from NAXOS now includes the complete set of secret violin sonatas! Recommended by the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan, Villa-Lobos left only three violin sonatas. However, these three sonatas vividly show the changes in his style before his study in Paris. No. 1 "Despair" and No. 2, entitled Sonata Fantasia, are masterpieces with a unique melancholy in their free composition. While the music has strong shades of French music by Fauré, Debussy, and others, Brazilian elements are incorporated here and there. The highlight is No. 3. The third piece is an explosion of musical language that foreshadows Villa-Lobos's later works. Perhaps because of its radical nature, No. 3 is rarely performed in concert, but I strongly hope that this CD will provide more opportunities for its performance. Still, what an avant-garde violin sonata! Yusuke Kimoto, President of the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan/ConductorThe three violin sonatas by Villa-Lobos were written in his 20s and 30s. At the time, Villa-Lobos was returning from a trip to Brazil to collect folk songs, and was beginning to be recognized as an up-and-coming composer, having established a language that incorporated elements of Brazilian music into classical music techniques. However, at the time of composing Sonata No. 1, he was still earning his living playing the cello rather than composing music, and his skills as a string player were also used in this piece, which is characterized by its melancholic atmosphere and lyricism. He also studied piano technique at length, and two years later he composed Sonata No. 2. This work, in which the two instruments engage in a brilliant dialogue in a free form, was performed in a concert of his new works in November 1915. And the third sonata, published in 1920, shows the influence of Debussy, but with a further refinement of diction that is linked to the later series of choruses. Baldini, who plays violin, is an Italian-born violinist who has lived in Brazil since 2005, where he is concertmaster of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra and also active as a conductor. Naxos Japan
