This captivating work is the piece with which the young Bizet (1838–1875) won the famous “Prix de Rome” in 1857. The Prix de Rome (French: Prix de Rome) was a scholarship program for study abroad awarded by the French government to students majoring in the arts. Established in 1663 by Louis XIV, it continued until its abolition in 1968 (though the music prize was added in 1803), it goes without saying that many artists shed tears of hardship in their quest to win it. This cantata survived that fierce competition. It is quite a masterpiece, but unfortunately, the score was lost and was not performed again until it was rediscovered in 1988. The story depicts the conversion of King Clovis of the Franks and his wife Clotilde to Christianity. And the fact that he displayed such astonishing maturity in the “Te Deum,” written the year after winning the prize—in 1857—is perhaps what makes him a genius composer. Naxos Japan
