British composer William Alwin left behind a body of work that includes five symphonies, concertos, operas, and more than 200 film scores. Similar to his contemporary Barber, Alwin prioritized music that appealed to the heart over music intended to be analyzed intellectually, and he openly identified as a Romantic. Alwin’s two piano concertos are stark contrasts in both structure and style. The relatively short, neoclassical “No. 1” is an ambitious early work brimming with modernism, and is said to have been inspired by the renowned pianist Clifford Curzon. On the other hand, the “No. 2” is a work so captivating in its majestic, river-like flow and grand romanticism that it is even considered a tribute by Alwyn to Rachmaninoff. Be sure to also take note of the masterful performance by Donohue and the conducting of Judd, a frequent guest conductor with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles.
