Unreleased live recordings of Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy from Antwerp in 1995 are now available on a 2-CD set! Since first sharing the stage at the Five Spot in 1958, Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy frequently performed together in Europe, eventually settling there in the 1960s. Lacy’s light-footed soprano saxophone and Waldron’s melancholy, reminiscent of Negro spirituals and Schubert, might seem like polar opposites, but they achieve a magnificent harmony, catalyzed by their shared admiration for Thelonious Monk. This album features recordings from Waldron’s final live performance, held on September 30, 1995, at the De Singel Arts Centre in Antwerp, Belgium, to celebrate his 70th birthday. Bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyril also participated. (C)RS
