Kirill Kondrashin (1914-1981) and Alexander Sladkovsky (1965-). This is an interesting seven-disc set that compares Mahler symphonies by two conductors who are almost 50 years apart in age. Kondrashin was born in Moscow, and after serving as the Permanent Conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre, he became the Music Director of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held from 1960 to 1976, during which time he recorded the complete Shostakovich symphonies with this orchestra, as well as all of Mahler's symphonies except No. 8. Mahler's complete symphonies, with the exception of the 8th symphony. Sladkovsky is one of the foremost performers of Mahler in Russia, and his recordings for MELODIYA in particular are highly acclaimed for their authenticity, careful expression, and abundant tension. Sladkovsky was born in Taganrog, studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the Moscow Conservatory, and made his debut at the Conservatory's Opera and Ballet Theater, conducting "Cosi fan tutte". In 2003, he performed at the "St. Petersburg 300th Anniversary" celebration, and in 2005, he was honored by the President of the Russian Federation as an "Honored Artist of the Russian Federation".Comparing the performances of Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 1, 5, and 9 by these two conductors will provide a foothold for understanding the evolution of "Mahler performance" in Russia and reconfirming the ties of tradition that have been handed down from generation to generation. * The names of the orchestras in Symphony No. 5 conducted by Kondrashin are in accordance with the information on the label.
