In addition to the presence and activities of Dowland and Schütz, the period saw a vibrant exchange: the latest works from Italy were imported, while compositions by Danish composers were published in Italy. This box set features music that would likely have been heard at the Danish court between 1550 and 1650—corresponding to the reigns of Christian III, Frederick II, and Christian IV—organized into eight CDs by theme. Kronborg Castle was built in Helsingør (known in English as Elsinore), which faces Helsingborg, Sweden, across the strait and served as the first line of defense for the capital, Copenhagen. It is known throughout the world as the setting for Shakespeare’s *Hamlet*. Many of the musical works once held by the Danish royal family were destroyed in past wars, and in fact, no manuscript collection actually exists under the name “Kronborg Collection”; the term is used here as a symbolic designation for Danish court music. The recordings include works meticulously examined by researchers from the manuscript scores of Johannes Stephanius and the manuscripts of Herlufsholm School, as well as works connected to Denmark and its musicians. From 2021 to 2024, Bo Holten and Musica Ficta served as the resident ensemble at Kronborg Castle, performing and recording these works in the castle’s ballroom (great hall) and in churches throughout Copenhagen. Combined with a comprehensive booklet, this release is a must-have for fans of Renaissance music.
