The long-awaited complete recording of the opera "Mazeppa," premiered on April 23, 1892, at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux during the latter part of the career of Clémence de Grandval, a 19th-century French female composer whose reappraisal has increasingly progressed in recent years. Born in 1828 during the waning days of the Bourbon monarchy and married to the Viscount de Grandval in 1851, she studied under composers such as Frottot (composer of "Malta"), Chopin, and Saint-Saëns (seven years her junior). She began gaining recognition as a composer around the 1870s, following Napoleon III's fall and the advent of the Republic. However, initially, she could not publish works under her own name due to her spouse's social standing. The Société Nationale de Musique de France greatly contributed to introducing her works and helped her gain fame. However, the Paris opera world rejected the premiere of "Mazeppa," and the work was never performed in the capital. After its successful premiere in Bordeaux, it became highly regarded as one of Grandval's late masterpieces and was performed in various locations until the eve of the Great War. 　Set against the vast plains of 17th-century Ukraine, this grand heroic tale unfolds across five acts, supported by an exquisitely crafted orchestration that represents the pinnacle of late 19th-century orchestral technique.
