Description:

Elsa Barlaine was a French female composer of the 20th century. Born into a musical family, she entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of 9, winning first prizes for harmony, counterpoint, and piano accompaniment. 1927, she studied with Paul Ducasse, and in 1929 won the Prix de Rome for her cantata "La Vierge guerriere" on the theme of Jeanne d'Arc. In the 1930s, his style reflected literature, politics, and spirituality, and he published his second symphony, "Voina War," among other works. In addition to performing, she held important positions with the Orchestre National de France and Radio France. Of Jewish descent, she participated in the resistance movement during World War II, risking her life. After the war, she taught at the Paris Conservatory and worked in film music. The Symphony No. 1 on the album, which she submitted to the Academy in Paris while studying in Rome, is written in a neoclassical style with influences of Dukas and Debussy, extended tonality, and the use of dissonance. The Second Symphony is in three movements, reflecting anxiety over the threat of war, with woodwinds playing an important role. The second movement, the Funeral March, portrays fear and sorrow through the use of weak strings and military tambourines. The symphonic illustration for "Pogroms," based on a poem by poet André Spiele, expresses Barlaine's fear of the rise of Nazism and anti-Semitism and depicts the contrasting perspectives of the young man's fighting spirit and the older man's resignation. The Funeral Music for Titian's Burial, the only work composed in her later years, is a somber piece for piano and orchestra that also evokes the melody of the Day of Wrath. It will be performed by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, conducted by Elena Schwarz, a female conductor who has won many international competitions and was selected as a "Dudamel Fellow" of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
