Description:

[Russian Cello Sonatas by Hecker and Helmchen Marie-Elisabeth Hecker and Martin Helmchen have collaborated on five CDs released by ALPHA. The two, who are partners in both public and private life, have produced their first duo album in about 10 years. Although the theme of the album is Eastern Europe, it is in fact a collection of Russian (Soviet Union) cello works.Starting with Shostakovich, who composed during the storm of the purges and whose youthful aspirations were tinged with tension and bitterness; Schnittke, who reconstructed his own "manifoldism" to make it more homogeneous under the oppression of the authorities; Stravinsky, who reconstructed "Pulcinella" for the Ballets Russes with Piatigorsky; and Vineberg, who was born in Warsaw and wrote while working in Moscow and was influenced by Shostakovich, folk songs, and klezmer. Stravinsky, who reconstructed it with Piatigorsky; Weinberg, who was born in Warsaw and wrote it while working in Moscow and was influenced by Shostakovich, folk songs, and Klezmer; Prokofiev, who wrote it for Rostropovich in his later years after returning to Russia from the West The other is Rachmaninoff, who wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 at about the same time as his Symphony No. 1, when he was still recovering from the failure of the first performance of his Symphony No. 1, and who also placed great emphasis on the piano. Hecker and Helmchen are in perfect synch in these works, which range from rich romanticism to extreme tension and stretching lightness. Naxos Japan
