New recording of "Atis," which conveys the work's universal appeal with style and finesse. A new recording of "Atys," one of the greatest masterpieces by Lully, the royal music director to King Louis XIV of France, and deeply beloved by Louis XIV since its premiere in 1676 and nicknamed "the opera of kings," is now available with video from the talented Argentinian-born Alarcon, who is making waves in the world of European opera. The tragic love story between the main character Attis, played by Matthew Newlin, who has also performed in Verdi and Wagner's great works, and the two female leads, played by G. Bridelli, known for his interpretation of Italian Baroque works, and A. Quintanz, who has played important roles in many of Alarcon's famous recordings, is listened to carefully with a precise interpretation and a passionate sound production. The sound is full of passion and passionate interpretation. The director Preljocaj, who is well known as a master of contemporary dance, has decided to omit the opening act and pursue the universal appeal of the work, just as he did in the many revivals before Louis XIV's death. The accompanying video will convey the plot well through the organic and abstract stage development inspired by the Japanese Noh play. The booklet (in French, English, and German), which includes interviews with the director and conductor (including the first recording by W. Christie in 1987), is well worth reading, The CD recording and the video are partially different casts, but both feature distinguished soloists. The orchestra, which includes two string players and two keyboard players, is led by concertmaster Florence Margoire, who sadly passed away in 2023, and the album is dedicated to her memory.
