CD1 features the Bavarian Radio Chorus and Munich Radio Orchestra performing Bruckner's religious works under the direction of Peter Dijkstra. This studio recording was made in conjunction with the season-opening concert on October 28, 2023, and features the majestic Mass No. 2 performed by the chorus under the leadership of Dijkstra, who is highly regarded as a leading choral conductor, and the ensemble of wind instrument members of the Munich Radio Orchestra. The program also includes five motets for unaccompanied chorus and two equales for three trombones. Bruckner's Mass No. 2 was commissioned for the dedication of the new cathedral in Linz and completed in 1866, but due to delays in the construction of the cathedral, the first performance under Bruckner's direction also took place in September 1869. The work was written for eight-part mixed chorus and wind ensemble, and because the chorus was too large to perform in the new chapel, it was performed outdoors to great acclaim.Bruckner later revised the piece in 1882 and premiered it on October 4, 1885 at the Old Cathedral in Linz, where it was also a remarkable success. It is said that "Bruckner stood in front of the organ during the performance, staring at the ceiling of the cathedral and uttering an inexpressible prayer. The version played on this disc is the revised version. The motet on CD2, "The Way to Music: Bruckner's World," by Markus van Heffer, tells the story of Bruckner as a composer of religious music, with a focus on Mass No. 2, through readings (in German only) and music. and music.
