Jonathan Biss

Description:

Born in 1980, Jonathan Biss has been in the limelight from a young age and has earned the trust of the musicians he has performed with, and in 2015, at the age of 35, he joined with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to launch Beethoven/5, a project that commissions five composers to create new works inspired by each of Beethoven's five piano concertos, performing both works in pairs. The project, Beethoven/5, was launched to perform both pieces in pairs. The first two pieces are "The Emperor" and Brett Dean's "The Music of Gnäixendorf - A Winter's Journey". The "Emperor" is a large scale, straightforward, and imposing performance. The performance shows the maturity of Biss, who has also completed a recording of the complete Beethoven sonatas. Gneeksendorf, which is mentioned in the title of Dean's work, is the town where Beethoven's brother Johann's house was located. Beethoven stayed there in the fall and early winter of 1826 with his nephew Karl, who attempted suicide, and then became ill on the journey back to Vienna, passing away less than four months later. The work is in three movements, rapid, slow, and fast, and runs approximately 25 minutes.Beethoven/5 is a major project supported by 15 orchestras and organizations, including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, which initiated the project. Dean's work was commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Wroclaw Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, in addition to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. This recording is a live recording of the premiere. The other works, in order of premiere, are Timo Andres, The Blind Banister (paired with No. 2), SALLY BEAMISH City Stanzas (No. 1), SALVATORE SCIARRINO Il sogno di Stradella (No. 4), CAROLINE SHAW Watermark (No. 3). I hope that these works will remain in the repertoire and will continue to be performed long after my death. We look forward to future releases in this series. Naxos Japan
