Count Liebenau loves Marie, the daughter of Hans Staudinger, a stubborn sword smith. In order to somehow win Marie's approval, he devises a plan and takes the name Konrad and works for Hans as an apprentice craftsman. Liebenau has successfully won Marie's heart, but she seems to love Konrad as a craftsman, so he is unsure if she will love him as a nobleman. Also, Hans, who hates aristocrats, having lost his wife to a knight in the past, is not likely to allow Liebenau to marry Marie if he knows that she is an aristocrat, or even a craftsman. Now, how will Conrado soften his master's feelings?... Albert Lortzing, an actor and singer in Germany in the first half of the 19th century and a recognized composer of operas, is the composer of the opera "The Swordsman". This opera, "The Sword Forger," set in medieval Germany, is a lighthearted work that bridges the gap between Mozart's and Wagner's earlier works. Although it is one of Lortzing's most popular operas, there have been few recordings of the complete work, and this live recording from the Theater an der Wien, where it was first performed, will be a welcome addition for fans. Hans is sung by veteran singer Günter Groisbeck, and the young soprano Miriam Kutrowatz, who has attracted much attention, are supported by the supple sound of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, which boasts a wide variety of repertoire.
