Michael Korstick is an award-winning pianist who has made numerous recordings of Beethoven's complete sonatas, Liszt, Kabalevsky, and French composers such as Keclan and Debussy. This time he takes up the challenge with a collection of sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. The more than 500 sonatas, which are said to have been written for the education of Princess Maria Magdalena Barbara of Spain, are in principle composed in two parts, and all feature a sophisticated writing style. The works themselves are simple, but the ornamentation is left to the player and is not written in the score. They also call for acrobatic techniques, imitation of the tones of various instruments, and a wide range of expression from joy to deep contemplation. Korstick has selected 37 of these sonatas, including some of the most famous, to create a set that he calls the "Best of Scarlatti Sonatas. The excellent technique and interpretation, as well as the brilliant sound of the Steinway, make this a must-hear. Naxos Japan
