Description:
The three violin sonatas written by Grieg are all masterpieces full of Scandinavian sentiments. The first sonata was written in 1865, when Grieg was 22 years old, and the melody of the second movement, which is in the style of a folk song, has a flavor that is uniquely his own. No. 2 was written in 1867. Originally conceived for cello and piano, the first movement begins with a melancholy introduction and moves into a lively main part. The second movement is also characteristic of this piece, and is filled with a nostalgic melody that is typical of Grieg. The third sonata, written about 20 years later, is the most popular of Grieg's violin sonatas. The passionate first movement seems to reflect the image of Teresina Tua, an Italian violinist who was said to have fascinated him at the time. The album includes two violin arrangements of Grieg's works associated with "Spring," and both works, full of songfulness, are beautifully done with a sense of connection to the violin sonatas.
