Description:
Matthew DuBourg (DUBURG) is the violinist who led the orchestra as principal player at the world premiere of Handel's "Messiah" in Dublin. At the time, he was known as a rare violin virtuoso. He had been active in Dublin since 1728, and while he was familiar with the local culture of England and Ireland, he was also familiar with authentic Italian music under Geminiani (which is why he played such an important role in the performance of Handel's authentic oratorio), and he occasionally played the violin in the world premiere of Handel's "Messiah" in Dublin. He was also highly acclaimed for his occasional performances of Vivaldi concertos. His performances of his own works were also highly praised, but unfortunately, he left only a few scores. From the rare surviving examples, this disc features the vocal works performed at Dublin Castle, along with masterpieces by Corelli and Vivaldi, both of which won him great acclaim. The disc also includes a selection of pieces that show the admiration and affection of his contemporaries for Duberg, vividly evoking the atmosphere of the Irish musical world on the eve of "Messiah". The soloist chorus is accompanied by a small ensemble (strings: 3/3/1/3/2, with two keyboardists and two string players on bassoon), and the old instrumentalists are in fine form. Naxos Japan
