A stereo recording exists of Toscanini’s masterpiece among masterpieces, the 1951 “Verdi: Requiem”! That said, it wasn’t recorded in stereo from the start; rather, it resulted from the coincidence that microphones were set up in two locations simultaneously. Since the right and left channels were recorded on different recorders, there are naturally some unstable sections due to the mixing process; however, the recording beautifully captures the expansive, expressive woodwinds, the lustrous virtuosity of the strings, and the singers’ majestic performances. The quality is more than sufficient for appreciating the artistry. This legendary performance took place at Carnegie Hall—not Studio 8H—during a benefit concert for “Casa Verdi,” a retirement home for musicians in Milan, Italy (also famous from Daniel Schmidt’s documentary film *The Kiss of Tosca*). It is truly a transcendent live performance, delivered with profound emotion. The first half of the program features Verdi’s “Te Deum,” and it is reported that a stereo recording of this piece likely still exists and is currently being investigated. This precious recording, which allows listeners to fully appreciate the orchestral arrangement—with the violins flanking the stage and the lower strings on the left—that Toscanini was so particular about, has been revived on MQACD. The accompanying photographs are rare, previously unpublished images capturing a rehearsal during the NBC Symphony Orchestra’s U.S. tour in April 1950.
