Latvian violinist Baiba Sklide's new album is a collection of Scandinavian works performed as a duo with her sister, Rauma. The two, who studied music together from an early age, respect each other's individuality, but at times their playing is so passionate that sparks fly violently. The Grieg sonatas were written at the height of their happiness when they had just married; the works of Sibelius and Nielsen, who are good friends but whose styles are surprisingly different from each other; and the sonatas of Stenhammar, who is strongly influenced by the German late Romanticism.
