The two "Sixth" symphonies are, oddly enough, in the same key of "B minor". Although there is a 46-year gap between the two symphonies, Shostakovich's being written in 1939 and Tchaikovsky's in 1893, the melodies of both works are deep and dark, with sighs heard everywhere. Shostakovich's No. 6 is untitled, but the first movement is heavy and dark, and the concluding celesta is mysterious and eerie. It is known that Bernstein also noticed the similarities between this piece and Tchaikovsky's Pathetique. The second and third movements are bright and cheerful, reflecting the unsettled world situation of the time, and the irony of Shostakovich's feelings at the time. On the other hand, the subtitle of Tchaikovsky's symphony, "Pathetique," was given by the composer himself and captures the atmosphere of the piece itself.Jansons' conducting, while brilliantly drawing out the connection between the two pieces, never drags either of them down to the point of heaviness, but uses the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra to its utmost ability to bring out music that is extremely spectacular and propulsive. The first movement of both works is a highlight of the performance, and it is a masterful performance in which one can enjoy the "vivid darkness" as if it had never existed before. Naxos Japan
