Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)

Description:

A once-in-a-lifetime, sparkling performance by the Orchestre National de France and Kondrashin. Thrilling, even more so than the performance with the hand-picked Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra! A surprising sound source that I was surprised such a thing had survived saw the light of day. Kondrashin and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France once-in-a-lifetime performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8. The performance is great, but the Melodia disc from 1961 sounds too bad, the Tokyo live performance on April 20, 1967 by Altus was the last day of the Japan tour, and the Praga disc from September 29, 1969 by the Praga Orchestra from Prague was a little too good. The Prague show on Praga on September 29, 1969 was not in perfect sound. Therefore, the live performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées on February 5, 1969, was a fan's delight. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 was composed in 1943, in the midst of the Russo-German War, when the Soviet Union was on the offensive.Although composed at a time when there was a glimmer of hope, the music is full of Mahlerian inflections, with little exuberance or joy, and is filled with a sense of hope for victory and trepidation about what might lie ahead. Kondrashin, who was one of the foremost Mahler conductors in the former Soviet Union, expressed this exquisitely. The performance is not introspective, however, but rather full of high-calorie, violent intensity compared to Mravinsky's. The tempo and interpretation of the Praga disc is very good. The tempo and interpretation are similar to the Praga disc, but the nuances and realism are incomparable. At last, a recording of Kondrashin's 8th is available that fully documents the brilliance of the piece. King International
