Its overwhelming presence is evident from the very first notes of the first movement. The beauty of the strings in the second movement and their magnificent harmony with the woodwinds. And then, the final movement! The power, concentration, and focus of the forte passages are truly one-of-a-kind. The driving force of the music, which gradually accelerates from the main section, is breathtaking. As this CD features a completely new remastered source, it is truly a must-listen. The “Haydn—” recording also features incredibly captivating solo parts and string harmonies. The Double Concerto, too, is a performance brimming with Furtwängler’s distinctive personality right from the opening of the first movement. The beautiful tones of the two soloists are also a standout feature right through to the finale. This two-disc set perfectly captures the three pieces from the matinee concert on January 27, 1952. Although these performances have long been well-known as EMI recordings, this is a wonderful release that brings them together in a single set. I have high hopes for the audio quality from the Rot-Weiß-Rot Broadcasting Group.
