Description:

The session recordings with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Strauss' Alpine Symphony, "Don Juan" and "The Knight of Roses" waltz by Böhm, who had a close relationship with the composer, are being released for the first time in authorized form. The moment of their first meeting as general music directors of the Semperoper was the most important encounter in his musical life. As if to confirm his own recollections, Böhm's recordings of Strauss's works have been a pillar of his repertoire and have been overwhelming in both quantity and quality throughout his long career. The most notable program, "Don Juan," which was cultivated through his interactions with the composer, is one of Böhm's best works, as indicated by the number of recordings. In 1939, he recorded with the Staatskapelle Dresden at the Semperoper, in 1957 with the Staatskapelle Dresden, in 1963 with the Berlin Philharmonic, and in 1976 with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne (AU In addition, audite has already released a stereo live recording with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra (AU 95591) made in 1976. A video recording of a performance and rehearsal with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was also made in 1970. Böhm was honored to conduct the 200th anniversary performance of "The Knight of Roses" when he was music director of the Semperoper, which he first heard in his native Graz. A live recording with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival in 1969 was also made. In April 1963, he also made a session recording of the waltz in Act III with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The "Alpine Symphony" is Böhm's second recording, dating back five and a half years to the September 1957 session recording with the Staatskapelle Dresden. The recording is a great listen. The performance is full of magnificent expression and full of energy, as is the tendency, since it almost coincides with "Life of a Hero" (April 1951) and "Death and Transfiguration" (March 1950) from Böhm's 6th Approach (AU95586). The sound quality of the broadcast session recorded by RIAS Berlin, which was the best remastered recording from the original master, and reissued by Deutschlandradio Kultur under an official license, is astonishingly fresh, even in monaural. It is hard to believe that it is more than half a century old. The quality of the recording and the completeness of the recording are such that it will be highly regarded as one of the best Strauss recordings by Böhm, who is known for his masterpieces.[Comments courtesy of King International] ----.
